ABOUT CLUTCH

Clutch was formed in Germantown, Maryland in 1991 and consists of Tim Sult (lead guitar), Dan Maines (bass), Jean-Paul Gaster (drums), and Neil Fallon (vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards). The group’s initial line-up featured Roger Smalls on vocals, but Smalls soon departed to be replaced by Fallon, who had attended Seneca Valley High School with the other members of the band. Before settling on the name Clutch, the band had gone by the names Glut Trip and Moral Minority.

CAREER

1991-2003: Early years and breakthrough

In its early days, the band toured extensively, soon making a name for itself and finding a fanbase. Its 12" debut single “Passive Restraints” was released on the Earache label in April 1992 and its popularity led to interest from several other labels. One of these labels was EastWest Records, who released the band’s debut full-length album, Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes and Undeniable Truths on August 17, 1993. Two years later, the band released their self-titled second studio album, which is their best-selling album to date. The album’s success led to a deal with Columbia Records, with whom they released their 1998 album, The Elephant Riders. The album hit the top spot on the Heatseekers Albums chart. After the release of The Elephant Riders, Clutch parted ways with Columbia and in 1999 they self-released the album Jam Room.

By 2001, the band had signed to Atlantic Records, releasing the album Pure Rock Fury in March of that year. The album launched three hit singles: "Careful with That Mic,"  "Immortal," and "Open Up the Border." Two years later, they released  Live at the Googolplex, as well as the rarities record Slow Hole to China.

2004-2011: Commercial and critical success

Blast Tyrant, Clutch’s sixth studio album, was released in March 2004. It gained traction with the release of the music video for the single "The Mob Goes Wild," which was created by Ryan Dunn, directed by Bam Margera, and starred Dunn, Margera, and their Viva La Bam co-stars Brandon DiCamillo and Don Vito.

Pitchfork and Lost Needles, the band’s 2005 release, combines the band’s 1991 Pitchfork 7-inch release with previously unreleased demos and early tracks. That year, they gained a new band member in organist Mick Schauer, who performed on the albums Robot Hive/Exodus (2005) and From Beale Street to Oblivion (2007).

Full Fathom Five, the band’s first DVD release, was released in September 2008, along with its accompanying CD. The following April, the made a remastered version of  Slow Hole to China: Rare and Unreleased available. A few months later came their ninth studio album, Strange Cousins from the West. On December 28, 2009, the band performed its entire 1995 self-titled album at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club. The show was filmed and was released as a two-disc DVD set Clutch Live at the 9:30 on May 11, 2010. The same day, the band’s 2004 album Blast Music was reissued on their label Weathermaker Music.

2012-present: Recent releases

A new single, "Pigtown Blues," was released on June 10, 2012 alongside an acoustic version of their 2009 track "Motherless Child" from Strange Cousins from the West.

Clutch’s tenth studio album, Earth Rocker, was released on March 16, 2013 and reached number 15 on the Billboard 200. It also reached number four on iTunes' overall Top 100 Albums chart and was number one on their Rock Albums chart. British magazine Metalhammer designated Earth Rocker their Album of the Year 2013.

The band’s eleventh studio album, Psychic Warfare, was released on October 2, 2015 and reached number one on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and number 11 on the Billboard 200.

It was three years until the band’s next studio album was released, with The Book of Bad Decisions coming in September 2018. The album charted at number 16 on the Billboard 200.
